Since 06.November 2006, all European airports will be affected by new security regulations due to changes in security regarding carry on items and hand luggage. Munich airport will also be affected by the changes in regulations regarding the carriage of liquids in hand luggage. Therefore passengers travelling from Munich airport are strongly advised that liquids should, when possible, be put into hold luggage and be checked in.

Included under the description of liquids are also drinks, syrups, soups and perfumes but also gels, pastes, lotions, shaving cream, sprays and all every other item with a similar consistency. Also the content of pressure vessels, such as tooth paste, falls under this category. Passengers who want to take any of the mentioned or similar items afore into the cabin of an aircraft, need to consider the following regulations for hand luggage:

All liquids and similar products are only allowed in receptacles with a maximum volume of no more than 100 ml. The decisive factor is the printed maximum volume on the packaging. In addition to this all liquids in their packaging should be put into a resealable clear see through plastic bar with a maximum content of no more than 1 litre. The complete contents of the resealable plastic bag must fit comfortably inside with the bag closed. Only one resealable plastic bag per person is permitted. All liquids should be shown to the security staff at the manual hand luggage screening check so that these can be identified. Suitable bags such as freezing bags are available in shops where hose hold goods are sold. The resealable bags can be bought also at the airport in the nearby shops, before entering the security checkpoint.

Exempt of these regulations is medication and special dietary liquids (such as baby food), that is necessarily needed during the flight. However, these items must be taken out of the hand luggage and shown separately to the security staff upon entering the security checkpoint.

After the security checks, passengers in the departure area at Munich International Airport can still buy liquid duty free items such as spirits or perfume. Passengers travelling from terminal 2 to destinations within the USA should note that there will be a second security control just before entering the gates. These passengers can only buy duty free goods after passing through the second security checkpoint or on board the aircraft.

DThe regulations regarding the purchase of duty free articles are applicable only at airports within the European Union or on board an aircraft that is registered in the European Union. The required sealing of the duty free articles takes place at the shop where it was bought. Therefore transit passengers who bought duty free articles within the European Union or on board a European Union registered aircraft can carry their sealed duty free bags with them through the security checkpoints as long as they have a receipt of purchase from the same day.

This regulation does not apply for transit passengers in Munich, who have bought duty free liquids at airports outside of the European Union or on board an aircraft that is not registered within the European Union. The duty free liquids bought outside of the European Union or on board an aircraft not from the European Union will not be permitted through the security check and will have to be left behind. This applies for example for duty free liquids, board at airports in Asia or America.
